The Honorable Tony Clement, MP Parry Sound – Muskoka, Lis McWalter, Chair of West Parry Sound Community, Jury Konga, Canada Ambassador for Open Knowledge, Joe Villeneuve and Chris Mahon from the West Parry Sound Geography Network all presented providing valuable insight into the topic of Open Data.

This was the second meeting for our Open Data Community Project.  Previously on December 2, 2014 at the Archipelago Council Chambers we held the “Open Data West Parry Sound Inaugural Meeting” for both Municipal members and the “Technical Members of West Parry Sound.”  While this was a starting point we encourage interested individuals to attend and learn about our Community-wide Open Data Project.

Learn About Open Data

Welcome to the West Parry Sound Open Data web page. We hope you find the following information helpful in understanding what Open Data is and how it can benefit you and the community. If you have further questions, please contact us.

What is Open Data?

Open (government) Data is often referenced as:

“A piece of content or data is open if anyone is free to use, reuse, and redistribute it – subject only, at most, to the requirement to attribute and/or share-alike.”  Source:opendefinition.org

Open data is also associated with being “machine” (computer) readable and having an acceptable Terms of Use agreement that isn’t restrictive.  The City has undertaken the Open Data initiative as a benefit to the citizens, businesses and the community at large as described in the following section.

Here’s a video that provides some context around the role of Open Data.  This comes to us from our colleagues in County of Grande Prairie in Alberta
